Riley CO #3
For observation 3, I observed Olivia James' Group 3 Speaking class. They had spent some time last week visiting the Claude Pepper Museum next door to the Hecht House and we visited again today. On their visit, they worked in groups to find the top 5 characteristics of Claude Pepper's life. They used a sheet that had dozens of words on it for reference. As they chose characteristics and beliefs that characterized Claude Pepper's life, they spoke in their groups and explained why they picked those characteristics and took pictures of their evidence from the museum.
The groups worked together to compile the info on the handouts. When they had all five, the group presented their ideas to the teacher and the class. Olivia asked them follow-up questions and asked them about their evidence.
At the end of class, Olivia explained that for their 1st speech the next week, they would be speaking on a topic or belief that was very important to them. They had just spent two class periods looking at Claude Pepper's life and what was important to him. She explained that they weren't starting that day, but that they should get started thinking about what is important to them, that they would like to present to the class.
