Riley CO #2
For my second class observation, I continued observing Group 2 as they went to Olivia James' Reading class. On the walk there, I spoke with a student who told me she struggles in Reading class because she finds reading and writing to be the most difficult part of English. She especially disliked writing in Academic English and doing things like forming a thesis statement. However, Olivia was very upbeat and energetic as she came into the classroom, and she was excited for the lesson which made the students excited as well.
The class began by Olivia reminding students about a handout she had given them previously about reading comprehension strategies. The handout outlined the SQ3R strategy: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. We went through a page that briefly (using a few sentences) discussed celebrations from a few countries around the world and then broke into pairs to use the strategy on each small section. My partner and I got the chance to talk about different cultures and ask each other questions based on the readings.
Something that I enjoyed was that while we were working in pairs, Olivia was looking up short videos of the different celebrations and projecting them on the board so we could see first-hand what we were reading about and discussing. Some of the videos were great conversation starters and allowed some students to share with the class about their culture.
