Riley CO #1
I observed Dr. Angel Rios' Group 2 grammar class. He began the class by playing upbeat music and greeting every student by name and asking how they were. Since today is Eid, the day which marks the end of Ramadan, Dr. Rios gave the Muslim students in class a chance to explain the significance of this day for them and in their culture. He explained the importance of Eid to the class and allowed them to ask any questions they may have about the holiday and its traditions.
For the first class activity, we played a game of charades to review the Present Continuous tense. Then, Dr. Rios introduced the Simple Past tense. He had them open their books to a text about the "Lost Colony of Roanoke." The students took turns reading paragraphs out loud, and then the class went through and underline each verb in the paragraph. Dr. Rios also took a few minutes to review any difficult or new vocabulary by first asking the students to explain and then using scenarios to describe it in a way they could visualize to help them understand. At the end of the reading, he reviewed it again to ensure the students comprehended what it said since they were mostly paying attention to grammar as they read it the first time.
To wrap up the lesson, he asked students what form most of the verbs throughout the passage were in and why. He explained that since they were reading a story, it is common for verbs to be in the simple past tense. I thought the activity was very engaging for the students, but the text seemed pretty difficult to comprehend as it used a lot of complicated words and was a little hard to follow at times.
